Acoustic Guitar Lesson: To Pick or Not to Pick?

The acoustic guitar is a truly beautiful instrument.  With it you can play an array of songs and one can use the acoustic guitar to express their thoughts and emotions.  Taking an acoustic guitar lesson is the best way to go about it, to learn the basics and get off on the right foot.  You will quickly learn there are many different tips and strategies that can help you with playing the guitar.

One important step is to decide whether or not to use a pick when playing the guitar.  It all depends on what type of guitar playing you’re interested in.  It all depends on what sort of sound you want to get from your guitar.  Flamenco guitarists for instance will rarely use picks because it does not produce a sound suitable for their style of music.

In almost all cases for fast leads and scales a pick must be used, as this fast of playing can be harsh on the fingertips and possibly even cause them to bleed.  You’re basically more limited if you’re not using a pick.  You’re a lot more limited when you’re not using a pick because there are only so many melodies that you can play.  In the basic acoustic guitar lesson a pick will be used.

This way you at least have more options available to you and can then switch back and forth from using a pick to strumming with your fingers.  There are actually steps to choosing the right pick for playing guitar, something that would be covered in any basic acoustic guitar lesson.  Now it’s just a matter of choosing the right size and style of pick.  Common materials for picks include plastic, nylon and tortex.

The size of your pick will have a great impact on how it sounds.  The smaller pick you use the lighter a sound you will get.  If you want to get more of a mandolin sound then stick to smaller sized picks like Carlos Santana.  Taking an acoustic guitar lesson will teach you all of these basics as well as more complex instructions on playing the guitar.
