Taylor Swift Love Story Guitar Lesson

I want to talk a little bit about the song “Love Story” because this is a song that I really enjoy putting a lesson together for, for people because it’s really fairly easy to play. You can strum it just like a campfire song, but you can also do some really intricate picking with it. And this again came out in 2008, but it has really grabbed peoples’ imaginations and stuff.

Taylor has said that the song was written when she was dating a guy that wasn’t terribly popular at school. She said that while it became a little complicated, it was still okay. When she originally wrote it, the first line was different; it was “This love is difficult but its real”. She said she got a really happy feeling when the song suddenly ended, like it really was that happy ending that every girls dreams about with a love story.

So she twisted things around a little bit and again, it started as, again, this autobiographical thing, but then she brings in of course Romeo and Juliet. Not to be confused with Mark Knopfler tune, “Romeo and Juliet”, but it’s a popular theme going back of course, to the Renaissance and Shakespeare.

The song has a very interesting chord progression, mostly played in “C”. However, it does modulate to the key of “D”. She does play it with a capo, which of course really puts it in the key of D, moving up to E when the capo is on the second fret. This does give it a very typical country twist, starting in one key before modulating slightly to a different key. This song certainly has become Taylor’s signature tune and continues to rip its way up and own the charts. In September, 2008 CMT started playing a music video of the song. It starts out with a guy, played by Justin Gastin, from the present day sitting under a tree. It shows some video scenes that alternate flashbacks and present day scents. It looks like an illusion to Pride and Prejudice.

Taylor is all dressed up in a ball gown, singing outside a castle, and she’s waiting for her version of Mr. D’Arcy, but singing. And some scenes alternate with the past where she’s dancing with some nicer gentlemen and stuff. It all ends when the gentleman arrives, and the video comes back to the present. The boy gets up out of the tree, and they walk to each other, and anyway, it won the CMA award for Music Video of the Year, in November of 2009. Another spectacular song by a spectacular songwriter, that’s for sure. If you aren’t already working on it and want to know what the chords are, just look up my lesson plan on it. I just can’t say enough about the amazing Taylor Swift. She is an incredibly strong up and coming songwriter that everyone should enjoy listening to.
