5 Simple Steps to Coaching High School Soccer

Coaching high school soccer

I don’t know if you know this but communication is the most important element to succeed in coaching high school soccer. The actual meaning of coaching kids is the art of communicating with them. This has the effect of expressing yourself to people with a view to perform them things in precisely the same manner.

In soccer coaching, I’ve come to notice that generally the former players have assumed the responsibility of being coaches. Then also they have to face a number of issues while coaching young players. These issues come up due to the inability to communicate properly. You must recognize that there are certain issues related to communication that need special attention if your job is to be made easier.

These are described for you one at a time.

When coaches watch their kids playing, they tend to become emotional. The coaches become spectators instead of adopting a critical approach to observing the kids. They fail to notice the important points that could better their team’s performance. The coaches fail to have an effective conversation that could help the players get to the winning post.

Even though the coaches are well versed with the technicalities of the game, they are not trained specifically on communication. For instance; most coaches don’t use videos or flip charts in soccer coaching because they don’t know about them. The coach may be technically talented but if he not able to communicate properly, regular practice sessions get really boring for the kids.

Coaching Youth Soccer

In coaching high school soccer, communication becomes all the more important because the kids start to understand the game quite well. They have been doing these soccer drills for some time but at different levels. By keep on changing training format, coaches can avoid the monotony of repeating the same messages again and again.

It’s a fact that sometimes the coaches completely forget that it is people who perform in the practice sessions. Only with a view to execute the training program well, coaches tend to ignore every other aspect of it. For example; Sending out instructions without taking the player’s name leads to uncertainty and confusion.

Some guidelines meant for coaches in football coaching include the following:

• Every message coming from the coach carries equal importance. So ensure that they are understood completely and correctly.

• Your language should be positive enough to push the players to try hard to perform well. Challenge them to be better rather than punishing them for being poor.

• Make sure you spend quality time with all your players. Studies indicate that coaches spend relatively more time with star players in team (up to seven times more!).

• Don’t wait for the problems to arise to sort them out.

• Strengthen the player’s self respect by matching criticism with praise. When it comes to coaching high school soccer, tilt the balance slightly more towards praise.

Believe my words. Your training programs will be immensely benefitted as a result of adopting these simple exercises.
