Educate Yourself Using the Net
The Internet has established itself as the best place to look for accurate and updated information. You can search any field you can think of, and you’ll find answers in article bases like Wikipedia, GoArticles or EzineArticles. Do you want to learn to play the drums? Have you always wished to know how to draw cars? The Net is ready for you. Many people find the Internet a lot more comfortable than traditional learning aids, and choose to engage in some independent study, working on their own.
However, serious independent study requires more than an Internet connection. The Internet is nothing but a tool. The tough part is to use it smartly. You’ll find that without quizzes or homework, it’s harder to focus and do an honest day’s work. These tips will help you keep your head together:
1. Show determination. You want to learn? Excellent! Who’s stopping you? However, there’s no one egging you on. So egg yourself on.
2. Mark your target. You must sit down and carefully plan your studies’ goals. Do you know exactly what you’d like to study, and for what purpose? Once you’ve answered these questions, you are ready to move on to the next step.
3. Create a study schedule. There are no classes you must attend, but you still have to spend a few hours every week studying. Remember that the amount of time you spend studying should fit your goals. You want to learn Dutch, but can only spare 1 hour every week? Forget it.
4. Scour the Net. Let the studying begin! Search engines and Internet knowledge bases will help you locate the information you need in the Internet’s vast ocean of information.
5. Don’t neglect your practice. Being independent does not exempt you from practice. Find ways to put theory to practice.
6. Have fun. This may not sound like a tip, but I insist upon reminding you to have fun with it. Being independent often means being alone, and studying without a partner can be hard. But isn’t it wonderful to learn interesting new things, and be able to do it on your terms?
So… what are you waiting for?? Go and learn something new!
