If you want to learn it. You can learn it.
Practice is more important than a teacher at basically every stage of learning guitar.
This is because it is a SKILL.
It must be learned by action, not by absorption.
Having a teacher is a good and valid way of learning most things.
Learning to do something yourself out of sheer desire to learn to do it is almost always better.
I have found that a teacher is only a real benefit for the following three things:
A) Helping motivate the student
B) Helping organize the student
C) Providing knowledge as content to be learned.
If you can cover A and B yourself, you will find that there is an awful lot of information that you can go pretty far before you start running into serious obstacles.
If all you ever want to do is plunk on the guitar for your own amusement and don't really CARE if you are ever any good at it.. .the HAVE AT IT.. if you think you may want to actually ADVANCE in your playing… the HIRE A TEACHER.
* YouTube are, I think, the ONLY free lessons. Just do a search for whatever song ya wanna learn – it'll be on there. The other "free" lessons….maybe you'd get 1 or 2 free lessons after paying for another dozen. Not many people do things for free anymore!
You can learn to be a passably decent guitarist on your own. There are plenty of self-taught guitarists out there, and many big-names.
I myself am self-taught. But I really wish I'd had lessons. With lessons I know I'd be a LOT better, and better grounded in theory, which is essential if you really want to be good.
If you insist on going without, I strongly recommend finding good people to jam with who have taken lessons. You can learn a lot from them. Get books on music theory, learn more than just how to play a few chords: ground yourself in the basics. And remember: Rome wasn't built in a day. It takes time, dedication, practice, and sheer will (ESPECIALLY if you're teaching yourself).
Find a friend who already plays. If you can't afford lessons you can get free advice from your friend. Most young guitar players are more than happy to guide you.
It is important to find that live help first. They will steer you to the right source.
After you learn, offer your help to the next ones that want to learn.
