The harmonious and colorful pitch of electric guitars was the pinnacle of rock and roll. Back in the 1950′s, this type of music was being tried and then in the 60′s and 70′s, that creation was improved upon until it was perfected. The gorgeous sound that comes flowing from an electric guitar is amazing. * Single Coil Pickups – This pickup has a single wire and coil. Single coil pickups are the oldest of electric guitar pickups. When strumming on single coil pickup, the sound is affected by other frequencies in the room which make a humming sound. These types of pickups are rarely seen today but are the choice of a few very well known rockers because of the unique sound they produce.

* Humbucker Pickups – This kind of pickup has two coils wherein the unwanted hum of the single coil pickup is killed. Basically, the coil carries two signals: one that the music is making and one that cancels out the hum. The actual piece responsible for this is called a Humbucker which was patented in 1954. The humbucker being the two coils.

* Double Coil Pickups – arrangement of pickups, just like their name, consist of two coils. However, for an unknown reason, guitarists do want the hum sound once in a while so the double coil pickup electric guitars sometimes come with a switch that can turn off the second coil.

There are many other factors that go into the sound an electric guitar produces. However, pickups are the single most important part of the electric guitar. Other things for example: neck length, shape, material, frets, and tuners make a difference too but not like the pickups. For a very long time, musicians have been experimenting the perfect guitar to make the best sound. Rock and roll has changed in some ways but in different ways it has stayed the same.
