Soccer Coaching: Discover the Philosophy

Soccer coaching

Let me present a real simple way to keep in mind some of the important soccer coaching factors that are needed in building the team philosophy and getting along with it. Using this philosophy for your youth team can be very practical; and simpler than you may think.

The elements which are essential for an effective youth coaching philosophy are 6; parents, coaches, excitement, selection, time, and success windows.

Communicating with Parents regularly: Parental influence is the key factor for soccer training which is essential in the mental and physical growth of your players, particularly on the day of the match. It’s not enough just to provide the parents with the brochure, “parental responsibilities” at the beginning of the term. Meetings with the parents should be set to discuss the concerns and reminding them the important points.

Developing soccer coaches: Training of soccer coaches should be an integral part of your philosophy instead of targeting the players. The kid’s parents can also be considered for soccer coaching. They would be the best candidates, not required in the beginning, but might be an option for the future.

Selection: The drop out of players with great soccer skills is mostly because of non-selection. According to studies, players say they would rather get selected for a bad team than not getting selected for a good team. Thus a logical system which provides the players equal game time should be used.

Time: Observe punctuality and tell the parents to be punctual as well. The start and finish times that are clearly defined make for an effective session.

Excitement: Is it necessary that every soccer coaching session should be fun? Make an effort to make each session an enjoyable one but do not forget that it is not possible to each session like that. Therefore, go for a positive attitude as an alternative.

At the time of training the kids, it is valid that coaches face problems with ideas on how to make training interesting. Therefore, the biggest obstacle that coaches face is to be creative enough to bring about new drills every now and then.

In soccer drills, it makes sense to keep escalating the difficulty aspect so that kids get skilled. A method of doing this is to start a game, introduce a problem, and then find a solution of it in a drill.

Success windows: Try and incorporate a “success window” for the season as a significant element in your training sessions. This means that you must determine a lower limit and an upper limit of time with a view to measure the level of success that needs to be achieved.

For instance, time frame of minimum four and maximum eight weeks. This can be worked out for both the team and individual members.

Do yourself a favor and have a soccer coaching philosophy like this become a part of the development phase of your kid’s training once the basics have been covered.
