When Reading Guitar Chords Online...what Does It Mean.?

I'm completely trying to learn guitar on my own and doing pretty well so far. What does D/F# mean in the chord progressions. Say for example eric clapton's wonder tonight goes “G D/F# C D G D/F# C D” Are they the same chord or something…please help.

It is the same on the piano. With the right hand you are playing a full D chord (three notes D, F# and A) and with the left hand you are playing the F# as a bass note. If you are playing bass guitar, you simply play the F# note.
