You will find many artists, who began with one genre and then moved to the other one. One prominent example is Bach. This musician first composed the classical music in a conventional way and then improvised it to present the audience with something unique.
Same is the case with playing guitar. You can easily improvise or combine it with other musical genres. By practicing and paying a bit of attention to the notes, the audience will appreciate it.
