Anyone that does homeschooling realizes that the standards or structure of the typical school setting is not enforced in the home atmosphere. Your options are wide open when you start your home school which means that you will not have to give your children tests on the subject matter all the time. It is important to test, however, so that you know where your kids are in regard to the subject matter being taught. Kids that are home schooled are not exempt from testing as many state laws require formal assessments to log their progress. Formal testing must be done even if state laws do not require it so that you can assess your child’s progress as you teach them. One of the alternatives available for parents who decide to home school their kids is the opportunity now available to use the internet to home school your children. The online schools determine the curriculum so it’s quite different than when a parent does the home teaching. They are structured like any other online classes, such as those for adults. However, you can take into consideration that you are there with your children to supervise them, help them when needed, and the children will have the advantage of being able to study at home. The Museum is another great place to get a feel for history. Local cultural events can give them knowledge on the area in which they live, and help them to understand their environment better. Nothing will help a child remember something more than an actual hands-on experience. You can visit a farm where the farmer is growing wheat; then take them to the mill that grinds the flour; then to the bakery that makes the bread. The next time you are at your local supermarket, they will appreciate all the work that those loaves of bread represent. If a child develops special interests or talents, you can give them more information and training in that area to see how it develops.

Although your child is house schooled they might still have a desire to participate in sports and or music. House schooled kids are allowed to play sports in the public Jr. High and High Schools. A lesson plan, outside activities, lunch, recess, or whatever you are including in that weeks lessons. And try to follow it without getting too distracted by other things. The beginning and ending times for each day are important for everyone to know. You might also set the times for breaks and lunch so there is no doubt as to when a certain activity is scheduled. This is important even if the lunch break is only going to the refrigerator and getting out the milk and sandwiches.

Home schooling is a practice that is getting more popular all the time. This is good news for parents who make this choice, as there are now more resources to help you get started.
