I have studied classical music for more than 12 years and music theory has always been a subject that wasn’t clear to me. I was able read notes which was very helpful in playing the piano and my ability to read rhythm was quite good but that was the extent of the theory I really understood. When it came to the circle of fifths and fourths and also I, IV, V chord progressions it was a different story.

I mean if my teacher asked me to play a IV chord or to recite the circle of fifths I could do so but it all came from memorization and I really didn’t know the mechanics behind it. Most of you reading this probably have no idea what I’m talking about either but I know one thing: knowing this information DID NOT make me a better piano player.

10 years later after I started my music career and after I learned how to improvise and write music on my own I started appreciating music theory only after learning it over. Imagine, I could have used that time to do something else…play video games, play basketball, watch TV. If I only knew!

So it could be concluded that music theory is important but only if you’re goals are to do more than just play the piano nicely. Otherwise, much of the theory just goes in one way and out another.

The basics of theory such as note reading, rhythm, dynamics etc. that pertain to playing a piece should be focused on instead. These are my thoughts as a piano teacher, professional keyboardist music producer and composer. I’m sure not all teachers would agree me but I’m entitled to my own opinion

You can also program your own material. I can now program a song in about 25 mins that used to take 4 hours. My music has a better “feel” thanks to the velocity perceptive “strings.” I actually feel like the MIDI grid assisted me greatly when it was time to switch over to real guitar. Holding The Instrument

To learn the guitar, the first thing you’re going to need to learn is how to hold the instrument. First, place the instrument under the crook of your right arm so that your right hand is directly over the hole where the strings are. Note that this is for right handed players. Next, place your left hand along the fret, or the arm of the guitar. You should hold the guitar so that your left thumb rests along the top of the fret bar, allowing all of your fingers easy access to the strings along the fret. You should practice strumming the guitar, without learning any of the actual notes or chords yet, so that you get comfortable holding and playing the instrument.

Learning How To Tune It

One of the most important aspect of learning the guitar is tuning the instrument. When the instrument is playing each note correctly, it means the guitar is properly ‘tuned’. If the guitar is out of tune, then every note will be wrong and you won’t be playing properly. The sound will be off and you will soon become frustrated and quit, thinking that it’s you that’s not doing something right. It’s not you, you just have to tune the instrument. You can learn how to tune the instrument by ear, or you can do like a lot of people do when they’re first learning the guitar and buy an electric tuner. An electric tuner will automatically determine if the guitar is in tune. You simply strum each string and then adjust the guitar until the tuner registers that everything’s in the right position.

There, now you’re ready to learn how to play notes, chords, and even music. But it’s important to get those few basics down because even one little bad habit can make it very difficult to learn all there is about the guitar and to use the instrument to its fullest potential.
