Los Angeles and Orange County Piano and Guitar Lessons : the Importance of Music Theory When Learning an Instrument | Online Guitar Lessons
As the coordinator and lead teacher of a music school that offers Los Angeles and Orange County piano lessons, guitar lessons, voice and music lessons, I have been asked this question a lot. Futhermore, having been in the music industry as a working musician/composer, I thought it would be helpful for me to answer this question.
Music theory is somewhat of a mystery when it comes to learning an instrument at times. When it comes to teaching music, whether it is piano, guitar, drums, violin or voice, it is crucial to teach some theory but to what extent would be a better question posed.
A Great Way to Learn Guitar
If you are thinking of learning to play guitar, you may want to take a serious look at the Self-Teaching electronic guitar from Pacific Digital. Anyone of any age, can learn chords and strumming by following lights. Some features include a selection of built-in songs and riffs for you to play along with and you can download more songs from your computer into the guitar.
You can also program your own material. I can now program a song in about 25 mins that used to take 4 hours. My music has a better “feel” thanks to the velocity perceptive “strings.” I actually feel like the MIDI grid assisted me greatly when it was time to switch over to real guitar. It’s a little flimsy feeling though, but for the price, it isn’t a dealbreaker.
