Even though the first sound synths built which utilised transistors (as against tubes) became available during the Ninteen Sixties it wasn’t until the 1970s that the first self contained, portable and compact style which musicians would recognise nowadays were sold. Before the compact and portable format of electronic sound synthesisers they were enormous and immensely expensive and complicated modular synthesizers from the likes of Moog and Buchla. The self contained, portable and compact Minimoog Model D were available to buy in the summer of 1970 and was praised for being affordable, but this was only if you compared it it to the cost of the modular synthesisers. It wasn’t until the appearance of the Japanese synthesisers manufactured by the likes of Yamaha, Roland and Korg and the English Wasp made by EDP that musicians began to witness something which could be described as being anywhere near affordable.

During the 1970s famous keyboardists, such as; Rick Wakeman, Jan Hammer and Edgar Winter, and bands such as Emerson, Lake and Palmer and Genesis, favoured playing synths made in the U.S.A by well known names such as; E-mu, Oberheim and Moog. 1973 saw the arrival of the first Japanese synths such as Korg and Roland. The Roland SH-1000 and the Mini-Korg 700 from Korg might have had a weaker sound than the American competition the synths from Japan were considerably cheaper. The Wasp synthesiser from the Electronic Dream Plant (EDP), manufactured in the British Isles, was first sold in Ninteen Seventy Eight and the recommended retail price was one pound short of £200.

For a pound less than two hundred pounds the Wasp synth was a real synthesizer which featured the common components of a VCA, a VCF, two DCOs and an LFO. digitally controlled oscillator (DCO) 1 waveforms are; ramp or pulse width(which can be set from 10% to 50%). The second digitally controlled oscillator(DCO) has waveforms which are either square or ramp and the synthesizer also has a noise generator.

The LFO (Low Frequency Oscillator), used to modulate the pitch and VCF and has the following waveforms sawtooth, sine, ramp, square, random (sample and hold) and noise. The LFO intensity can be varied in positive and negative values and it is able to reach speeds into the audible frequencies for some radical sonic effects. 2 EGs (envelope generators) are used to individually shape the amplitude and the filter. Envelope generator controls are sustain (with optional repeat function), attack and decay for the amplitude and attack, decay and delay (with optional repeat) to alter the voltage controlled filter.  The VCF (voltage controlled filter) is a multimode 2-pole bandpass, highpass or lowpass with controls for resonance, frequency, filter type, LFO amount and Envelope amount.

To reduce the expense the Wasp synthesizer had strange non moving, touch sensitive keyboard (instead of the usual moveable piano keys. Other rather unusual aspects of the synth are that it has; an internal speaker, a black and yellow color scheme and an EDP-Link IN/OUT (to link 2 Wasps). Some would say that it somewhat looked like a toy for a child the sound that emanated from it were astonishing and the synth was surprisingly popular amongst keyboardists. Well known players are Vince Clarke, Nick Rhodes (Duran Duran), Dave Stewart (Eurythmics) and The Stranglers and there are a great many others such as; Bauhaus, Devo, Kim Wilde, 808 State, WhiteHouse, J. G. Thirlwell (Foetus), Notwist, Add N to (X) and Dave Holmes. Of course the Wasp synth was enormously bought by home users and struggling keyboardists as well. Almost certainly the best method of incorporating the heart and soul of a Wasp synth is to acquire a selection of EDP Wasp synth samples to use in your music sampler such as Gigasampler, Kontakt, EXS24, Halion and Structure.

But because of the notion that cheap guitars are of low quality, people often find themselves arguing over it. Some would say that the tone is not at par with the original Gibson Les Paul guitars, and others would say the Epiphone necks are not very user-friendly.

The truth of the matter is that the Epiphone is very much the same as the standard Les Paul guitar, built with more mahogany pieces, yet the sound is the same.

Users of the Epiphone guitar have not complained about it and they say the pickups are the same as the Gibson standard, and although the heads tend to move more than the standard, this helps to keep it tuned.
