Cheap and portable, the guitar is probably the most popular musical instrument around. It provides a perfect accompaniment for a singer and is used just as well to shred in a metal group. Unfortunately, there’s more people who want to play than are capable. Many people indicate a willingness, “oh I’d love to play” but they don’t. While there’s no substitute for practice time, there are some tips to keep in mind to get you going.

Use the internet. There are enough resources there to get you started, even if it means you sifting through a couple bad, unhelpful sources. The first thing you ought to do is learn to read a tablature (the simplest way music is written for guitar). It’s simple to understand, rooted in logic opposed to something musically esoteric. That will unlock for you how to play melodies, but chords might not be written out this way. Learn to read chord charts. The same logic underlying tab (short for tablature) is behind chord charts. There’ll be dots on certain strings on certain frets indicating where to put your finger. Learn which lines are one of the six strings and learn which are frets and this should be simple.

The internet has led to changes that would have been impossible to understand just a decade ago. Buying a musical instrument without hearing it is one such change. But keep a few things in mind when you do it and it can be a convenient way to score a good instrument at a good price.

There’s really two kinds of people who should be buying their guitars online, experts or really serious guitar players and beginners. The first group knows exactly what kind of guitar they want, and at that level of price and quality they can be assured that that particular guitar will be terrific. Beginners don’t really care as much, so long as it has six strings and can play. The truth is each guitar is unique as its made out of a particular sheet of wood that experiences conditions unlike any of its fellow models at the factory. Each sheet is alive, and guitars can age with grace or misery depending on how they’re maintained. This needs to be kept in mind when looking online, but even still it’s possible to buy.

Let’s say you’re looking for a vintage guitar. You know what an old Gibson ES125 will sound and play like because presumably you’ve played one before or you have a particular interest in that guitar. There is variety in each instrument, this truth can’t be said nor emphasized enough, but you can count on quality guitar makers to make reliably good instruments. Most sellers are very upfront and compile a list of the defects, repairs, problems with the instrument. Typically they’ll have close up shots of the damaged parts. This will convince you they’re being pretty honest. It’d take a cynic to believe that they’re listing the minor defects so to appear honest only so they can get away with a big, big problem. Check the seller’s history on Ebay. Many reputable music shops sell on Ebay too, so if you can find out where they’re located and learn more about their business this should help.

The piano is not only one of the most highly respected musical instruments, but the most versatile. Violins are terrific for classically composed music, not so terrific for rock. Saxophone is great for jazz, but has a diminished role in rock. Piano can commonly be found in rock, blues, classical, and in countless genres in between. Plus, with modern synthesizers and keyboard effects, being able to manipulate a keyboard enables you to play and endless amount of other instruments! Before you learn about technique, learn what the notes are. You’ll see that there are twelve different notes, and each one is identified by its relation to the adjacent black coloured key. Look at an actual keyboard, or a picture of one, and you’ll be able to visualize it. It’s essential to know what key is what. When you begin investigating you’ll discover that the notes on the keyboard ascend alphabetically, A through G. The white keys are named after a singular letter, whereas the notes in between, the black keys, have a name borrowed from the adjacent white keys. The idea is that as you move to the right the notes ascend in pitch, and they get lower as you move to the left. Get this overall bearing first before moving on.

Tuning a guitar is one of the first things to aggravate new students of the instrument. When the guitar isn’t tuned and they go to play, it’ll sound discordant but they may not know why. When they do know why their chords sound wrong tuning it may still pose a good challenge. Frustration can be debilitating, especially at the novice stage. Here are some tips on how to keep your instrument sounding true.

The most obvious way is to buy a guitar tuner. Believe it or not, there was a time when tuners cost hundreds of dollars! Now they’re ultra small devices that can clip onto your guitar. These ones are good because they’re convenient, but they also work reliably since they’re physically attached to the neck, and thus pick up on the strings vibrations through the wood. They can be purchased for around twenty dollars. Unless you have perfect pitch they’re very useful for musicians of all levels.

Acoustic guitars are a beautiful, beautiful thing. Competing luthiers have unique styles and traditions. When it comes to beautiful guitars, aesthetics are taken into account, but players need an instrument that performs. Sound is the crucial thing. Also, how well it keeps in tune, how durable it is, and how the action remains intact (the action refers to the proximity and how parallel are the strings to the fretboard). A lot of preference is personal at the highest level, but when discussing the best guitars around there’s a few companies whose names always come up.

Martin Guitars are exceptional. Built in America out of the finest rosewoods and mahoganies, they’ve been crafting beauties for decades. Let them tell you what makes them better than the competition. Sometimes they’ll have a studio from where they teach, and other times they’ll come to your home. Usually the latter is more expensive, but sometimes not by very much, and the time you save is always worth it.
