Most people use their Right hand to strum the strings, producing the notes which the Left hand fingers. Someone who is naturally Left-handed will often choose a ‘reverse strung’ guitar. This means that the guitar is conventionally strung and tuned, but in the opposite direction. Chords are then played with the Right hand, and the strumming is done with the Left. Sir Paul McCartney is a well-known example, and in the notes which follow this should be borne in mind, reading Right for Left and vice-versa.

The first five minutes of the very first lesson for a complete beginner should not involve holding a guitar. Everyone should spend five minutes every day performing this exercise before starting any further practice.
