In this guitar lesson, Jon MacLennan will teach you a cool country lick in the style of Brent Mason. There are tons of great licks but this one has an interesting use of the open string but at the same time is pretty basic. So if you would like to start with country guitar this is the right lick. Also, the good thing about this kind of lines is that you can use them in any musical context, such as jazz, blues, pop, etc.
Ok, so... What is a lick? A lick is combination of notes which frequently are based out of scales or chords and used often. It´s really important to know some licks when we have to improvise, sometimes they could help our lives (musically speaking ofcourse)...
As the title says, this line or lick is in the style of Brent Mason, so if you have never heard about him I really recommend you to check out. Brent is an American session guitarist and occasional songwriter. He is known primarily for his work in the field of country music. In addition to releasing two instrumental studio albums, he holds several credits as a songwriter. He is a 12 time winner of the Academy of Country Music Guitarist of the Year Award and a two time winner of the CMA Award Musician of the Year.
I also recommend you to check out great country players like Chet Atkins, Albert Lee, Danny Gatton, Scotty Moore, etc.
Alright, the example of today´s lesson is a pentatonic based lick in A7, but ofcourse as almost every country line we will have lots of chromatics notes and open strings. In the tab you will have one possible fingering but you can try any one you want...
And don´t forget to come up with your own ideas, which is the best advice for starting to find `your´ unique sound and style.
That is all for today... Anyway I suggest that you keep enjoying and learning from Jon MacLennan and all the staff of Guitarcontrol.com! Where? In our free lessons at www.youtube.com/guitarcontrol
