Paul Gilbert Guitar Lesson: Pentatonic Chicka

Paul Gilbert (http://paulgilbertguitar.com) shows you a fun exercise to help practice your guitar scales... CHICKA!

You can't skip scales, because they are the building blocks of great technique. But, they're so boring. What do you do? Make it fun! You don't have to be boring just because you are playing scales. Paul Gilbert wants to show you can still have fun and make scales exciting. The typical way of playing scales leads to a bit of a dead end, Gilbert says. However, elements of rock and roll are so much about power, hitting notes hard, and being able to control the other notes. This new way of practicing pentatonic scales, the pentatonic chicka will help you insert the rock and roll into pentatonic scales:

As soon as you can map out the finger placements of the notes of the scale, jazz it up a little! Add a vibrato and add a chicka. Tap your foot, and put your whole body into it. It is no longer that boring scale that you dread. With these new additions, the scale isn't only left finger work. It is now something you can apply in songs!

With the picking, the note itself is played with a down stroke, and the chicka is a down and an up. Not only are these fun to practice with, the strokes will help you keep in time while practicing your scales.
