A lot of guitar players never learn to read a note of music. They do everything by ear. Some of us who don’t naturally hear the notes and can’t name the notes we do hear may start to believe that you either have an ear for music or you don’t. Well, it’s true that playing music by ear may be a bit easier for some people, but that doesn’t mean you can’t learn to play guitar by ear. This Youtube guitar lesson from Guitar Control will give you some cool tips for learning how to play guitar by ear and how to be able to hear guitar notes and chords.

First things first. You don’t have to be able to name a note or chord to be able to play music by ea. You can learn how to play guitar by ear just by hearing variances in notes and chords. If you can distinguish between chords by the way a type of chord sounds, that goes a long way toward learning to play by ear or learning how to play songs by ear. Major chords sound brighter than minor chords. Play a few major and minor chords and you’ll start to hear the difference, then compare other types of chords to those chords. You can also play chord progressions and listen for progressions that sound like the progressions in songs you want to play by ear. Learning to play by ear is just a matter of practice, and this Guitar Control lesson shows you lots of different ways learning guitar by ear can be accomplished.

Learning to play guitar by ear doesn’t require any special skills beyond listening. You can learn how to play guitar by ear simply by trying to play along to some of your favorite songs. The more you do it, the better you’ll get at learning how to play a song by ear. You can learn music by ear or get into playing music by ear by playing as often as you can and listening for sounds that match. Eventually, believe it or not, it all starts to come together and you will find yourself hearing the music you listen to in an entirely new way.
