Good book for those who don’t read music

 on November 11, 2013

If you are new to guitar, and don’t know how to read music, this book is for you. It is straightforward, and simple using the tablature method rather than standard music theory-which will give you a basic start on beginning to understand reading music and music theory later on if you choose. By taking some time doing the exercises, I was strumming away faster than I thought and have also learned that their are a number of music sheet books with tab measures which can let you go on beyond this book and play a lot of different forms of music. It is geared toward the absolute beginner, and is not overwhelming. I can say that it has helped me, but like anything else it does take practice.

AMAZING book for beginners. I learned how to tune my guitar, the name of the chords and the basic chords. If you know NOTHING about guitars and want to learn how to play it, definetly get this book.

Easy to understand and learn guitar

This is a nice beginning guitar book. I purchased it for my fiance as he bought a guitar and is trying to learn how to play it. The book is laid out in easy to read detail with a nice graph on the back of the book. Since my fiance is unfamiliar with reading music, or has never had music lessons this book teaches you to play by tab format and is simple for him to understand. Tab (or tablature) is a way of writing down music that can be played on guitar, or drums. Instead of using symbols like standard music notes, it uses ordinary characters and numbers. Tab is one of the best ways to learn music for those who don’t know music notes or have never had music classes. Reading tabs is a lot easier and quicker than learning in the traditional way, so it’s great for beginners. Because of this he is learning his chords so much quicker. I love that the book covers chords and position chords and is allowing him to learn chord patterns, and correct hand positions for the guitar. The book covers a lot of different styles of music and includes good pictures and descriptions that are simple enough to give him a good start to learning guitar. I consider this book and excellent value, worth every penny of the asking price here and we are definitely enjoying my fiance’s newfound guitar skills. He’s only had the books a few weeks and is already playing several songs.

If you’ve never touched a guitar, this is the book for you. In the first four pages it explained every part of a guitar, which string did what, which fingers played what keys, how to tune your guitar, and how to play a chord. The back cover shows what I believe are all major and minor cords. You then have enough chords to play the simple songs that complete the book. It makes everything simple and concise. If you know all these things now, this is not the book for you.

a useful guide

A nice and concise introduction to basic guitar playing. I expected it to be bigger in size, but it turned out to be more of a magazine/booklet kind of thing, not a real book. However, it is basic guitar in a nutshell for beginners who do not know musical note. Those looking for more details should seek another book

Quick launch your guitar playing.

Wish I had got this book first. It progresses quickly and logically. I have been using the “Guitar For Dummies” book, but this one takes off and gets you playing real music asap.

It’s a book by Hal Leonard Corp need I say more! But seriously I bought it to refresh my memory but if new this book would have you playing fast it’s well written and I think anyone would benefit from it’s content. If wondering if you should buy I say yes it’s a great price for value and great guitar book

I am currently using this book off/on because I got stuck on the “Arpeggio” part of the book. I have never learned to read music, so the book did a great job for someone without knowledge of reading music. I will probably need to get a DVD on “How To” play guitar so I can see it “Visually”. But the book is all in all a good book to learn how to play guitar.
