How to Tune an Electric Guitar for Beginners | Fender Play | Fender
(guitar chord) – Let's talk about tuning
your electric guitar. It's important to make sure we're in tune because we want our notes and
our chords to sound right, And remember, this guitar is made of wood, so temperature changes,
and humidity changes, will effect the tuning. Also, your tuners may
be knocked out of place by taking it in or out of
a guitar case or a bag. And if you've just changed your strings, it's also a good time to tune. Now I'm playing this Fender
Telecaster with all six tuners on the same side. Let's look at the strings, so
we can start with our low E, A, D, G, B, and then our high E. And one reminder, if you've
just changed your strings, you wanna make sure you stretch them out, as you're tuning, to ensure that they're
tight around the pegs. And if your guitar sounds like this, (plays guitar chord) it's definitely time to
tune, so let's get started. There are a lot of ways
to tune your guitar, including the Fender Tune app,
which is a great way to tune using your mobile device anywhere.
Let's get into the app, and one of the first things I wanna do, is make sure I have the
correct instrument selected. So I'll go into my settings, it's already set to electric guitar, but I can also do acoustic or bass. There's some helpful tips here if you want to look through those, or if you want to just
get started on the tuning, there's manual mode or there's auto mode which we're gonna use right now, which easily detects your notes and gets you into standard tuning. I do want to remind you
to tune up to the note. This ensures that your
string is not only in tune, but tight around the tuning peg. If we tune down, or loosen the string, there's more risk of the
string going out of tune when you start playing.
Let's start tuning with our low E string. So I'm gonna pluck the note (plucks guitar note) and see where I am. (plucks guitar note repeatedly) So this tells me that I'm
flat, or below the note, so I need to tune up
or tighten the string. (plucks guitar note repeatedly) So I'm gonna keep playing the note, let that note sustain until I get there. (phone chimes)
There we go, there's our E. Let's move on to the A string. (plucks guitar note repeatedly) So for this one, I'm actually sharp, I'm actually above the note. So I need to go down, and
remember what I said before, I'm gonna tune down a
little bit past the note, and then tune back up to make sure the string
is tight around the peg. (plucks guitar note repeatedly) (phone chimes)
There we go. And let's move on to our D.
(plucks guitar note repeatedly) A little flat, so tune up. (plucks guitar note repeatedly) (phone chimes)
Alright, very good. Now our G. (plucks guitar note repeatedly) There we go.
(phone chimes) That was easy. And our B. (plucks guitar note repeatedly) There we go.
(phone chimes) And then our high E string. (plucks guitar note repeatedly) (phone chimes) Let's see how we did. (plays guitar chord) Sounds great. Again, there are a lot of
ways to tune your guitar, you can stick with the Fender Tune app, or you can use the Fender
online tuner at fender.com. You can also use a clip-on
tuner or a pedal tuner. Use the tool that seems right for you. Good luck and have fun tuning. (plays guitar music).
